Cloetta and Repos: a trusted partnership for over 25 years

Cloetta, het bedrijf achter KING pepermunt, has been working with Repos for over 25 years. Jan Betzema, who has now been with Cloetta for 40 years, clearly remembers how that partnership began. Cloetta became a customer in 1999, when Ben and Robert took over the business from their father and the company had just six employees.

When Jan was looking for new stamps in 1999, he had already come across the name ‘Repos’ on an old stamp. He was surprised to find the company was based in Dokkum. The rapport felt natural right from the start. “For me, a good working relationship is paramount,” says Jan. “You get a sense of a company’s work ethic and how they treat you. My initial meeting with Ben and Robert went very well. A look inside the production hall—seeing Feike, the man behind the milling machine then and now—confirmed that impression.”

Cloetta doesn’t need new stamps every day, but even after long periods without contact, the service from Repos is excellent right from the start. The quality is consistently high: the stamps easily last around twelve years. “That speaks for itself,” says Jan. Furthermore, it is important for Cloetta to work with suppliers from Friesland. Repos fits the bill perfectly: craftsmanship, reliability, and a partnership that has endured for decades.

How are peppermints made and branded with a logo?

Peppermints, such as the well-known KING pepermunt, are made from a soft dough based on sugar and natural peppermint oil. This dough is carefully mixed until it achieves the right consistency: pliable enough to be shaped, yet firm enough to hold its form. The peppermint dough is then rolled out and fed into a shaping machine, where it is divided into small pieces. These pieces are formed into the characteristic round peppermints.

Before the peppermints harden, they receive their distinctive logo. This is done using a metal stamp from Repos, which presses the logo or text into the soft dough. Since the dough is still pliable at that stage, a sharp, durable relief is created without damaging the peppermint. “The quality of the stamp is crucial here. A well-made stamp ensures that every peppermint looks the same, day in and day out. With high quality and the right material, such a stamp can last for years. Repos delivers that quality,” concludes Jan.
